Sylvia's holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN and a Master of Arts in Piano Performance from San Francisco State University. Sylvia is an active member of the National Association for Music Education and the American Choral Director's Association.

In her long-term tenure as Director of Choral Music at North Kitsap High School, she has built and sustained student interest in six choirs: a Men's Choir, a Treble Choir, two jazz choirs, an auditioned women's choir, and an auditioned Symphonic Choir with seventy-five members. Student choirs under her direction have won numerous awards at venues throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City. Former students continue to want to sing with Sylvia and are members of Amabile.
Sylvia enjoys travelling and spending time with her husband, Jim Cauter, a music teacher at Seattle Central College and Olympic College, and her two children, Jeff and Emily. Sylvia recently participated in her first triathlon and intends to do more.
